Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work has been established in the year 2008 with 3 teaching associates as faculty and 40 students, later 3 regular faculty were recruited. The department was started as one among the departments initiated by the university during its inception. MSW Programme offers 198 credits containing 50 innovative job oriented programmes at the University level. Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Work with Disability, Social Entrepreneurship are a few among the innovative courses introduced from 2017 onwards under Choice Based Credit System. The department’s main aim is to aspire to excel in developing developmental social workers, encourage professionalism, and promote social justice and empowerment. With a healthy mix of theory and practice, the Department has geared itself to be stronger in teaching, learning, research and consultancy. The department collaborates and cooperates with public, voluntary agencies and para professionals in providing facilitating environment for participatory learning. In the year 2011 the Ph.D programme is also initiated in the department. So far 4 PhDs were awarded and 4 Ph.Ds were still in the process of completion. The Department entered into Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Trust, Yunus Sanjeevani hospitals, Green Climate Team and Pratham Education Foundation. The Department students are participating actively in NSS program. Student extension activity is another area where the students adopted Ponduru & Kothapeta Villages which were famous for Khadhi cloth, they interact with the weavers and understood their problems and tried to remedy them. The department also actively participated in the Unnati Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), a project of worth Rs. 50,000 titled “Thread Wending Machines for Weavers in Ponduru Village” was sanctioned. A series of training programmes on drug abuse prevention were sponsored by National Social Defense Corporation.


To become a leading Department for innovative, interdisciplinary approaches in educating Social Work practitioners and scholars, conducting research, and serving as a catalyst for positive social transformation.


To develop human resources for competent and effective professional Social Work practice, teaching and research with diverse range of individuals, groups, and communities by using a framework of social justice and human rights focused on sustainable and participatory development.


  1. Understand the history of evolution of Social Work profession in India, UK, USA, Europe, & provide education and training for making a career in Social Work.
  2. To provide opportunities through intensive field practicum to work with variety of people in their development and provide service to those who need it.
  3. To provide inter-disciplinary collaboration for better understanding of human problems, services and issues related to human development.
  4. Develop the capacity to integrate knowledge and practice-theory by participating in intervention for self-direction, growth and change through self-awareness.
  5. To promote among learners a sense of responsibility and commitment to work with different sections of people especially the vulnerable sections of the society.
  6. To acquire knowledge and skills in undertaking practice-based research and to administer human service organizations
  7. Develop a sustainable professional identity as a Social Worker by imbibing values and ethics to Social Work practice.
  8. To engage in non-discriminatory culturally sensitive practice that seeks social and economic justice for clients, without regard to age, class, caste, culture, disability, ethnicity, family structure, gender, marital status, national origin, race, religion, and sexual orientation.
  9. Develop critical understanding of the application of legislation, legal process, and social policy.


  1. To promote among trainees a sense of commitment and dedication to strive for equity, social justice, social harmony, and peace.
  2. To develop confidence among the students to feel themselves as change agents for social change and transformation.
  3. To equip learners with key skills such as communication skills, critical thinking skills, social perception, empathy, emotional intelligence, tolerance, ability to coordinate and set boundaries.


Upon completion of the programme, the students will be able to:

  1. Acquire the ability to observe, understand and analyze social realities, characteristics, and dynamics of social systems.
  2. Develop the ability to recognize the need for newer programs, initiate participate in them.
  3. Develop an understanding of organizational structure, resource management, and day-to-day administration for human service programmes – developmental and welfare programmes.
  4. Enhance writing skills to document practice appropriately. Recordings to be viewed as an expression of interest, motivation, and involvement in practice and as evidence of enrichment in the process of professional growth.
  5. Gain capacities to integrate knowledge and practice-theory by participating in intervention.
